You are very charitable, to imagine that they are saying much deeper, more impressive things in their own language! :) I don't know how on earth the elves of Mirkwood fit in - I don't think Tolkien actually thought about it - that is, he demonstrably did think a lot about how everything fitted together, once he got to LOTR. I suspect this passage with Gildor is something he wrote before he started the serious world-building, and that he didn't have the heart to junk later.
